I know Star Trek Online has a good number of fighters, but that's going to be influenced by MMO realities. I seem to recall one world in ST:TNG having fighters, but can't remember if it was a less advanced world, a resource poor world, or both. That's all the official stuff I can really remember. It was originally a courier ship adapted to combat by the Marquis (for use against the Cardassians? Dominion?), and went on from there. I know the Federation Fighter (the Peregrine) shows up in Deep Space 9, and has been used by the Federation as well as the Marquis. However, one of them has to ask the question: what's the role of fighters/small craft in Star Trek? I'm bandying about some ideas for an infrequent/filler game.
